What Drummonds lawns are up against
Full sun, big ground. Most Drummonds lawns have no shade problem at all — they're bermuda country edge to edge, and when the soil is fed and opened up, they can be some of the best-looking lawns on our route. The catch is scale: an acre of thin turf has an acre of openings for weed seed, and out here the seed supply next door is a hayfield, a ditch bank, or woods — not a treated lawn.
Edges are the battleground. Fence lines, field borders, and gravel drives feed a steady supply of grassy-weed seed into the lawn, so the pre-emergent barrier earns its keep twice over. Rain is the only irrigation most of these lawns get, which means the bermuda toughs out August on its roots — one more reason aeration and fall feeding matter on big rural lots.
And then there are the moles. Quiet, moist, rural ground grows earthworms and grubs in quantity, and moles follow the food — Drummonds produces as many mole calls as any town we serve. We treat the grubs, which is the part of that food supply anybody can do something about, and we say the rest out loud too: earthworms are most of what a mole eats, so mole work out here is about making ground less worth digging, not about promising an empty acre.
Around town
Glenn Springs Lake is the landmark everybody knows — 310 acres of crappie water off Grimes Road, home of the annual kids' fishing derby — and the properties scattered around it are exactly the big, open, out-of-town places we mean. It's about a fifteen-minute run from Brighton, so rural doesn't mean remote.
Timing for Drummonds
Open ground warms first. With no canopy holding the cold in, Drummonds lawns hit crabgrass-germination soil temperatures as early as anywhere in the county, so the late-winter pre-emergent here goes down on the early side of the window. Mole activity ramps up as the spring soil softens, too — tunnels appear almost overnight — so early season out here is a two-front job.
